Akitso is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing equity in the food industry by providing culturally responsive branding, design, and marketing services—resources that are often inaccessible to immigrant, BIPOC, and low-income entrepreneurs. Through strategic, design-driven support, Akitso strengthens small food businesses, enhances visibility, and increases long-term resilience in a competitive marketplace.
Internship Opportunity
We’re looking for a social media-savvy intern excited about food, design, and small business. Over 3 months (approx. 3-8 hours/week), you’ll work closely with our team and local food entrepreneurs to co-develop and execute a real-world digital marketing strategy—gaining hands-on experience from research and content creation to client handoff and performance analysis.
This is an unpaid internship. We’re committed to making the experience meaningful through mentorship, flexible scheduling, and the opportunity to build a strong portfolio of work.
What You’ll Do
Phase 1 » Strategy
Audit a food business’s digital presence
Research audience and competitors
Co-develop a digital marketing / content strategy
Build a social media content calendar
Set measurable goals and benchmarks
Phase 2 » Content Creation Support
Generate captions and experiment with hashtags
Advise (and support, if bandwidth allows) Akitso’s design team on content production and posting
Track performance and adjust strategy based on metrics
Phase 3 » Handoff & Client Empowerment
Develop a toolkit for the business owner (tutorials, templates, guides)
Help train the owner on tools and workflows
Deliver a final report and portfolio-ready presentation
You’ll learn

Building your work portfolio with measurable impact
Who you are
A student or recent grad with a passion for food, culture, and design
Strong writing and visual storytelling skills
Comfortable using Instagram, TikTok, or Facebook for business
Familiar with Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar tools
Organized, creative, and community-minded
Excited about equitable food systems and supporting small businesses
Bonus: Fluent in Spanish, Vietnamese, or Khmer (Cambodian)
